GENDER INEQUALITY : ASPECTS

Gender Inequalities in Different Aspects

Gender inequality is an issue that still around in the society. Although we have reached an advanced world, but there are still some countries that trapped by this problem such as India and Bangladesh. It is a crying shame because we allow this kind of critical situation extend until nowadays. The archaic thought has led to three aspects that boys and girls are treated differently in a family, namely education, marriage and responsibilities.

From the aspect of education, boys are given higher education than girls because parents invest more money on boys as they thought that girls will just stay at home after they get married. Actually, girls have a better academic performance than boys. “Even in the 1950s and 1960s girls earned higher grades than boys and had higher class standing in high school” (Claudia Buchmann, Thomas DiPrete & Anne McDaniel, 2008). Thus, it is not fair that parents just giving the studies opportunities to the boys only, instead they should give both of them the same treatment as well.

Furthermore, girls will be coerced by the family to get married and they can just obey to the order. According to Judith Lorber (2001), in that kind of family, girls are vulnerable to beating, rape and murder by their husband. It is a violence on girls and has not solved until today as it has become a natural notion in the society that is not a cinch to overcome.

It is a norm that girls are responsible to household chores because the influences of outdated thinking which housework such as doing laundry, cooking and cleaning should be done by girls. According to Sarah Thebaud & Sabino Kornrich (2021), women will continue doing housework after came back from work while men will not even though the women’s earnings are equal or greater than the men. So, men should do chores together in order to create a gender equality in the society.

The ancient belief should be totally eradicated and replaced with contemporary ideas as the world is keep changing from time to time. Awareness in the society should be raised so that the society are alert on this issue and start to change the culture in order to give freedom to girls. They can do what they desired for as their rights are protected and surely, they have the competence to survive in the rat-race society.
