GENDER INEQUALITY : EFFECTS IN EDUCATION
Social Inequality is the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social
positions or statuses within a group or society (Moffitt, 2017). Although there have been
numerous protests, social inequality still exists nowadays and one of them is gender inequality between men and women in education. Men's education levels are still higher compared to girls. The question remains is what is the effect of gender inequality in education on girls? Here are several effects of gender inequality in education.
First and foremost, girls will have lower self-esteem due to inequality in education. Since they didn’t receive a good education, they typically cannot read or write or even speak their mind. These circumstances drive them to think that they’re useless and will just rely on others. On the other hand, an educated woman can be more confident. For instance, Kamala Haris acted as the first woman to become US vice president. She had graduated from Howard University and Hastings College of the Law (The White House, 2022). Her educational background had shaped him into a powerful woman. She can talk comfortably and persuasively in front of millions of
people. This clearly shows that unfair treatment in education between men and women can seriously decrease their self-esteem.
Moreover, social inequality in education will also lower the girls' social status as well as their empowerment. Since they didn't have the knowledge to fight against their rights, there are lots of restrictions on women. For instance, women have been forbidden to drive in Saudi Arabia, and must rely on their fathers or husbands to get from place to place (CBBC Newsround, 2018).
In other countries such as South Asia and SubSaharan Africa, young women are forced to get married by the age of 18 (OHCHR, 2022). All of the unfair treatment will not happen if women are educated. Despite obeying the laws, they certainly will voice their dissatisfaction and pull out their ways to change their fate. Generally, social inequality in education will cut down girls’ empowerment and social status.Furthermore, victims will face detrimental health issues. The World Health Organization (2021)recognizes that health outcomes are unequal for people, with inequity especially
disadvantageous to women across their lifespans. As illiterate, they don't know how to tell their
illness to the doctor. Hence, instead of going to the hospital, they prefer to treat themselves.
There are so many illnesses that are hard to be controlled without medicine such as diabetes,
hypothyroidism as well as depression. As a result, their condition might worsen. So, social
inequality in education can have a major impact on an individual's health.
As a result, social inequality in education is a critical problem that needs to be addressed. I
hope that more parties can engage in this activity to get the ball rolling so that every Tom, Dick,
Harry, and Janice receives a proper education.
