GENDER INEQUALITY : FILM INDUSTRY

The artistic golden sun rose and started painting the dark sky into a bright blue sky. A

girl nearly 28 years old, leaning on the balcony railing with a cup of coffee in her hand; her

hair was ruffled by the wind, she was amused by the cool morning breeze. Sipping the

coffee as her memories began to flash in her mind.

Elsa is an ordinary girl full of dreams to become an actress at a young age. Her father

passed away when she was sixteen which is very hard to acknowledge the situation for both

of the mother and daughter. Therefore, she was doing part-time jobs where she could get

money, but it’s insufficient to support her mom. Then, she started to search for opportunities

in movies to fulfill her desire.

That was her first time in the audition without any experience. She was waiting for the

director’s positive feedback after giving her performance instead she was discriminated by

the director, “you’re not an actress material at all. You got talents but you’re not attractive as

other actresses; dark skin, fat and all these things about you are not admirable. Moreover,

you are from destitute family. If you do a movie with this unappealing face then that movie

must be cause a biggest loss. So, it’ll be better if you get rid of your so-called actress

dream,” he said in a mocking way which shattered her dream in one go. His malicious

behavior made her realized that if you want to become an actress you’ve to be pretty and

tempting.

Walking by the lake her steps halted as she rested her hands on the cold metal surface.

The smell of wet soil was giving her nostalgia, inhaled and exhaled every bit of it, she tried to

remove the things from her mind. Blinking her eyes multiple times not letting the tears come

out, somehow her tears dripped down remembering the incident. “ Doesn’t matter where I

come from. I can be whatever I want to be because I put my mind to it. That’s the way to

shut the detractors with my performance,” she thought pulling herself together.

After so much struggle, she did her first movie which didn’t do well. She was vilified by

the media for her personality and complexion. However, she didn’t give up on her dream

easily. She tries to learn the skill from every director. She started doing many femaleeccentric

films as a lead character and she was recognized by others. Gradually, her

performance in every film attracted and celebrated people. She was on cloud nine and loved

the euphoric feeling of achieving her aspiration.

“ Ma’am, the director who you gave the audition for the first time, wants to collaborate

with you now for the next movie,” a voice came from behind her.

“ Sure,” she nodded as her lips curved into a victory smirk
