GENDER INEQUALITY : SPORTS

Narrative essay: Gender inequality in sports

Elizabeth was a charming freestyle skier. Her mother was a skiing coach. Elizabeth would
follow her mother every time her mother coached. Even though her mother was a skiing coach,
she didn’t place high expectations on her. Like mother like daughter, Elizabeth was great at
sports. Elizabeth loved sports because of the influence of her mother. She followed in her
mother’s footsteps.

When Elizabeth was in school, she was criticized that her body being large and non-faminine
in school. She was isolated because of her tanned skin. Everyone thought that female athlete
won’t succeed in sports. When she fell, someone would ridicule her that sport was not suitable
for females. Besides, she was the only girl in the skiing team. No one wanted to team up with
her. She asked the girls to join the skiing team, but they didn’t have any interest in sports.

One day, Elizabeth fell when skiing. Her leg was broken. She was struggling to turn her legs.
She couldn’t stand up after each falling. This reminded her of people saying that females
should not play on the male sports team. She wanted to quit skiing. She was anxious and
depressed after quitting skiing. Her mother asked her not to give up and change the public
attitude towards female athlete. Elizabeth was motivated by her mother and continued to
chase her skiing goals.

At the age of 12, Elizabeth wanted to fight for women’s rights in sports. Elizabeth gave a well
turned speech against stereotyping women as responsible for caregiving tasks. “Girls who are
into sports are not like boys. Instead, sports are also for girls.” said Elizabeth. She urged all
the girls that do not to feel scared because you are the youngest or the only girl player. She
thought that sports don’t drive people apart but unite people. But the issue of gender inequality
in sports still exists.

A few years later, she became the youngest Olympic Champion in freestyle skiing at the age
of 18. She was not only one of the youngest gold medal winners in freestyle skiing in the
history of the Winter Olympics but also the first Winter Olympic champion in the Chinese
women's snow event. Everyone was shocked. She showed the world that female athlete is
powerful and capable of anything. Her successful career in skiing had inspired many women
to sport and became a role model for the new generation of girls.
