GENDER INEQUALITY : A TRADITIONAL FAMILY

A Traditional Family

There is a girl, named Yan, is born in an ordinary and traditional family. Amy, is the best friend of Yan. They are neighbours to each other. They walk to school together.

One day, it was a hot summer day, Yan and Amy went back home as usual. After they said goodbye to each other, Yan went into her house and heard her father was talking to her mother, "I have made a decision which I want Yan to marry with Sam after she has finished her secondary studies." Yan was stunned in front of the door. Then, she ran towards Amy's house, holding back her tears, trying not to cry. She knocked on the door.

"What's happened Yan? Why are you have tears in your eyes?" Yan started crying, explained the scenario to her. "Oh no, how can your father make the decision on behalf of you, it's not fair to you! You should have the freedom to choose who is the person you want to marry with. It is your rights, no one can decide for you! Let me follow you back home and discuss with your father so that he can change his decision."

When Yan reached her home, she behaved rigorously as her father is a strict man, he will not easily change his mind on what he had decided on. "Quickly go to have a bath and look after the shop!” said Yan's father.

"Good afternoon uncle Jimmy, sorry for disturbing. I heard that uncle wants Yan to marry with Sam after finished her secondary school. May I know why uncle make this decision without having discussion with Yan?” asked Amy.

“Because she is a girl! Girls don’t have to get higher education as they will get married when they reach marriageable age and they will just stay at home only!”

“I totally disagree with you. Yan supposed to live her life that she desired for, not parents that make decision for her, it means you have deprived her rights. I hope that uncle Jimmy will change your mind." said Amy.

After Amy went back home, Jimmy started to realise that he had made a wrong decision-he should give freedom to Yan to make decision, if she wants to further studies, he as her parent should support her. And now, Yan is a doctor that always help people who was in need.
