GENDER INEQUALITY : WORKPLACE
Gender Inequality
In Career (Expository Essay)
Nowadays, it
goes without saying that social inequality has become a problem we have to
face. Especially, gender inequality in careers was the most egregious social
inequality issue. That is no denying the fact that the issues already happened
since over the past century or earlier through looking at the historical
context. As the
proverb says facts speak plainer than words. Whether now is the 21st century, women
are still not treated as equally as men whatever in which aspects or
circumstances. There are still some issues that suggest gender inequality in
the workplace such as the gender pay gap, sexual harassment, and promotion.
People’s
opinions about the unequal gender pay gap vary from person to person. Some
people say that the major cause of the unequal gender pay gap is ability. To
them, the performance of men in the workplace is better than women. Pay gaps
can be found in all states (Kaifi, 2013). Nevertheless, women have better work
organization ability than men. Furthermore, men are considered dominant and
self-oriented, whereas women are considered helpful and friendly.
Moreover,
another gender inequality issue in careers is sexual harassment. Sexual
harassment in the workplace has been around for as long as men and women work
together Board,
N. (2018). Obviously, if we ignore this problem exactly will be put in danger. Studies
show that the percentage of sexual harassment happening cases was increasing
day by day. It is widely recognized that sexual harassment is a universal
problem and would giving a negative impact on both genders. In addition, the
victims of sexual harassment would fall into emotional distress and loss of
focus.
Furthermore, it
is universally acknowledged that promotion issues were a serious issue in the
workplace. Definitely, unequal opportunities for promotion in the workplace
would cause undermines the well-being of colleagues. Women use the feminine style of management
where sympathy and sensitivity are factors used in making key decisions
(Beckman, Menkhoff, 2008). As a consequence, the promotion issues should be
solved as soon as possible to avoid being a continuous extension of violence
and the company should give fair growth opportunities to each employee.
Based on the points discussed above, we may reasonably conclude that gender inequality would bring a myriad of negative impacts to our society and needs to be confronted over time. Gender equality was necessary to achieve social justice and economic prosperity and was essential in the world. Gender equality can only be achieved and promoted when people can access and enjoy the same resources and opportunities regardless of gender. In a word, the whole society should pay attention to these issues, and only in this way can gender equality in careers be promoted in the future.
