GENDER INEQUALITY : WORKPLACE
Gender inequality in the career has been a persistent problem for decades. When it comes to the workplace, men and women have never been equal and fair. Women have always been recognized to be more delicate, while males will be given more tasks. Gender stereotypes have traditionally played a significant influence in allocating women to underpay or lower status than males. In the workplace, discrimination against women may take many different types, including during employment or recruiting. Now, what are the effect and the solution of gender inequality in workplace?
There is a variety of effects and one of the effects of gender discrimination in workplace is it will cause individual mental health issues. When someone is discriminated it can lead to frustration, anger, high anxiety levels, and depression. For instance, a male police chief refuses to promote women police officers because he believes that women cannot do better than men. An individual might take drugs or alcohol to cope with stress and adversely affecting their health conditions. A few researchers in their fields have found that discrimination is associated with depressive symptoms and other negative health effects (Kim G et al. 2020). Companies can introduce mentoring systems to encourage the use of mentors. Mentors can be a guide to lead, to aspire and to boost the confidence of fresh graduate employees.
Moreover, gender inequality in workplace will cause a loss of morale which is morale decline in a company. When employee is not treated fairly, they will feel resentful and start to disobey the instruction given by management. Poor morale will lead to toxic work culture in workplace, and it will affect the performance of employees drastically. Pretend that, a woman who has not been given equal chance in work will turn passively in work or miss their deadlines of business Companies can celebrate International Women’s Day together to create awareness about the contribution of women and promote gender inequality in workplace. Em, Sereyrath. (2022) conducted their research on International Women’s Day originated in the labour movement and to commemorate the beauty and achievements of women all across the world.
Lastly, the income of a business will reduce. When conflict and gender discrimination often happen, office productivity will diminish. For example, if a worker had been sexually harassed, she will quit the job hence the company will need to hire and train again for new workers. According to Gelfand et al.(2007) a good HR policy and good organizational structures will solve the issue eventually. A good plan organizational structure for company will create a fair workplace.
In conclusion, gender inequality in workplace is a serious problem. People should be concerned about this issue and lend a hand to solve it.
